Why I DO WHAT I DO
I learned about work as a means to an end at a young age - chores around the house, doing yard work, and babysitting. Earn money; buy stuff. Simple as that.
Through the years, I cobbled together a series of seemingly unrelated jobs before, during, and after my 30 years in banking and money management (these include but are not limited to: waitress, temp, laborer, administrative assistant, improv comedienne, senior manager). I learned a lot along the way.
On the verge of burning out in my own career, I was diagnosed with cancer. A groundswell of support from my colleagues—at all levels of the organization—prompted me to look again at what work really meant. I was heartened as colleagues rallied in unexpected ways to support me as I recovered. I found new meaning in my work.
Then, a fourth merger loomed on the horizon. It is challenging to feel productive in those circumstances.
I found that listening deeply to my direct reports and creating a safe, confidential space for them to hear themselves think helped them get clear—which allowed them to navigate changes successfully and do their best work.
That's also when I discovered coaching!
